CBD 101

What is CBD?

CBD is the shortened version of the word Cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is one of many cannabinoids which are found in cannabis plants. These are the active molecules that provide the most benefits from using cannabis. Cannabinoids made by plants are technically called phytocannabinoids, and cannabinoids produced by humans and all mammalian animals are called endocannabinoids. That’s right, we can make our own! And so can your dog! Endocannabinoids are neurotransmitters that regulate and affect mood, cellular activity, and general homeostasis. A well known neurotransmitter is serotonin, known as the happy molecule.

When we ingest or use CBD topically, CBD molecules bind with the receptors in the endocannabinoid system, changing the way you feel physically and mentally. Many people claim CBD is not psychoactive, but it is! This explains why CBD is helpful in uplifting mood or relaxing. CBD is not psychotropic meaning it cannot get you high like THC does. There are many other common cannabinoid molecules, including THC, which is the most abundant cannabinoid in the cannabis plant.

Our products do not contain any THC. CBD is the second most common cannabinoid and Cannabichromene (CBC) is the third. CBC is thought to aid in mood and joint and muscle function. Another common cannabinoid is Cannabinol (CBN) which is believed to support a good night’s sleep and joint and muscle function. Our products contain more than CBD, they also contain lesser known cannabinoids such as CBN and CBC, which is why they are called broad spectrum.

What does CBD help with?

CBD, and other cannabis derived compounds, may offer amazing health benefits! Due to a legacy of prohibition and a supposed lack of formal or conclusive research,  we are not allowed to make specific health claims on our website. We believe in trying things for ourselves and hope you do too. Keep and eye out for educational information on our blog and social media.

  • Research has shown that CBD has an effect on the endocannabinoid called anandamide. Ananda translates to the word “bliss” from the mystic yogic language of Sanskrit. Anandamide is believed to aid in the uptake of serotonin in the brain, which improves our mood
  • CBD is commonly being used for sleep. Quality sleep improves all aspects of our lives! Taking CBD to wind down from the day is helping hundreds of people recharge through better sleep.

What is the best way to take CBD?

Your method of taking CBD depends on what you are using it for and absorption. CBD oil taken sublingually (under your tongue) or in the form of a capsule is effective system wide. You will absorb the most CBD this way, second to inhaling it. This is great for effecting the endocannabinoid system which is linked to the nervous system. Our salves and roll-ons are perfect for targeting specific ailments externally. All of our products have detailed descriptions, if you have any questions please ask!

How much CBD should I take?

“Low and Slow” is the motto when starting with CBD. We like to start with 1mg for every 20 pounds and increase as needed. If you are around 140lbs consider starting with 7mg. If that sounds like too much to get started with, do what you are comfortable with such as trying a few drops. Consistency helps the endocannabinoid system become more balanced, so it’s extra helpful to make CBD part of your daily routine.

How much CBD should my pet take?

The same “Low and Slow” concept applies to other animals. Their size and weight should also be considered, 1mg for every 20 pounds still applies.  In general, try a small dose consistently and see if your pet shows improvement, increase the dose steadily until you see desired results. Speaking with a veterinarian who has an understanding of CBD could be helpful.

What does broad spectrum mean?

All of our products are made from broad spectrum hemp extract. Broad spectrum means that the oil has a host of cannabinoids and terpenes but not THC. Examples of these cannabionoids are CBN and CBC as mentioned above., These cannabinoids and terpenes work synergistically to provide an increased effect rather than CBD isolate. CBD isolate is just that, there are no other cannabinoids besides CBD. This is still beneficial but does offer the natural synergy of other plant compounds.

Terpenes are hydrocarbon compounds that occur in most plants. Cannabis is the most terpene rich plant on record! They have unique scents, flavors and effects on our bodies. Terpenes are the super stars of aromatherapy, think lavender for relaxation. Lavender contains terpenes called myrcene, pinene, and more. There are many terpenes in cannabis but we will touch on myrcene since it is also in common lavender. Myrcene has been reported to reduce pain and inflammation.

Is CBD legal?

Yes, CBD derived from hemp plants is federally legal as passed in the Farm Bill. Some states and jurisdiction have their own rules and regulations making legality unclear. We ship to all 50 states.

Will I test positive on a drug test?

You will not test positive on a drug test with our CBD products, our products have 0% THC. The legal limit for THC in CBD products is .3% which has caused some people to test positive on drug tests. This is not enough THC to get you high. If you are required to take drug tests, using a product without THC is your safest option.
